Last month, Cindy Bristow from Softball Excellence was in Montreal doing a clinic on softball hitting and pitching.
She spent a whole day on the topic of hitting and one of the aspects she discussed was the difference between swinging and hitting. She explained that most coaches spent most of their time training the swing and very little time on pitch tracking and pitch selection.
Yet, in order to be able to hit the ball, you have to be able to track it and decide when to swing. Tracking and pitch selection are skills that need to be trained just like learning how to swing the bat. Having a great and sweet swing does nothing if you can't see the ball well and make the right decisions.
During that weekend, she presented several drills to train that aspect of the game. I got so many requests that I told her she had to write something about it. She promised she would do it and she just did.
